The “6 months left” mindset.

The other week I was chatting with my dad about what we’d do if we had 6 months left to live…

Quality time with family and travel came to mind.

It got me thinking about how we approach work.

While it’s a dramatic way to look at things, I think it’s a really powerful way for us to re-focus and re-align our career, purpose and goals.

While it’d be nice to pack everything up and travel for the ‘last 6 months of our life’, this is just not possible for many of us.

Given we need to work to live, let’s take a practical approach…

With the “6 months left” mindset in mind, I want you to ponder on the following:

  • If you had 6 months left to live, would you be doing the work you’re currently doing?

  • Why/why not?

  • If not, what work would feel more satisfying and fulfilling?

  • What work would feel like a better use of your precious time?

Note that these questions are not designed for you to answer right away. They could take a little while for you to think about, absorb and really honestly and openly answer. I always find a notebook/journal helpful for the ‘big life questions’.

Again, while the ‘6 months left to live’ mindset may seem dramatic… our time is finite. It is our most precious commodity.

And so I pose the question to you again - if you had 6 months left to live (and you had to keep working!!), would you stay in your current job?

Something to think about!

A little self-reflection goes a long way…
